The Early Years

COURSES AT END OF ERA: 7

In the early years, GolfNorth began as a modest venture when Al Kavanagh purchased Acton Meadows (now Acton Golf Club) in 1994. Despite having little experience in the golf industry, they expanded the 9-hole neighbourhood course to 18 holes.

By 1998, with the acquisition of Calerin, Beaverdale, Brant Valley, Cedar Creek, Fergus and Orangeville, GolfNorth started to grow its portfolio. The early days were characterized by a spirit of independence and learning, setting the foundation for future growth.

The Golf Boom

Courses at End of Era: 11

From 2000 to 2005, GolfNorth entered a period of structured growth and strategic expansion, coinciding with the post-Tiger Boom in golf. The company embraced technological advancements by implementing digital tee reservation systems, streamlining operations, and enhancing customer service.

Key acquisitions during this period, including Foxwood, Dundee, Canterbury and Conestoga, helped solidify GolfNorth’s market presence. Strategic alliances with suppliers and partners further expanded its reach and capabilities.

Positioning for Growth

Courses Added: 15
Courses at End of Era: 26

The era from 2006 to 2015 marked a significant transition and positioning for growth under the leadership of Shawn Evans. After founder Al Kavanagh retired, Shawn Evans was appointed CEO, bringing a new level of professionalism and strategic direction to the company.

This period saw GolfNorth experimenting with different business models, hosting high-profile events like the Manulife Classic LPGA, and the first discussions of expanding into non-golf related business ventures. These initiatives strengthened GolfNorth’s brand and operational base as a leader in the Canadian golf industry.

Since 2016, GolfNorth has focused on national growth and business expansion, extending its influence across Canada. Expanding into the hospitality sector with properties like Forest and Keltic Lodge has diversified GolfNorth’s offerings and revenue streams, further solidifying its position in the industry.

The acquisition of notable courses like Cape Breton Highlands Links and expansion into regions such as British Columbia and Alberta demonstrated its growing capabilities.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought renewed interest in golf, leading to the highest interest level in golf in recent years.
